We address the problem of person re-identification from commodity depth sensors. One challenge for depth-based recognition is data scarcity. Our first contribution addresses this problem by introducing split-rate RGB-to-Depth transfer, which leverages large RGB datasets more effectively than popular fine-tuning approaches. Our transfer scheme is based on the observation that the model parameters at the bottom layers of a deep convolutional neural network can be directly shared between RGB and depth data while the remaining layers need to be fine-tuned rapidly. Our second contribution enhances re-identification for video by implementing temporal attention as a Bernoulli-Sigmoid unit acting upon frame-level features. Since this unit is stochastic, the temporal attention parameters are trained using reinforcement learning. Extensive experiments validate the accuracy of our method in person re-identification from depth sequences. Finally, in a scenario where subjects wear unseen clothes, we show large performance gains compared to a state-of-the-art model which relies on RGB data.
七、主讲人简介:
Zicheng Liu is a principal research manager at Microsoft. His current research interests include human activity understanding, human pose estimation, person re-identification, and face recognition. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University, a M.S. in Operational Research from the Institute of Applied Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Science, and a B.S. in Mathematics from Huazhong Normal University, China. Before joining Microsoft Research, he worked at Silicon Graphics as a member of technical staff. He co-authored three books: “Face Geometry and Appearance Modeling: concept and applications”, Cambridge University Press, “Human Action Recognition with Depth Cameras”, Springer Briefs, and “Human Action Analysis with Randomized Trees”, Springer Briefs. He was a technical co-chair of 2010 and 2014 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, and a general co-chair of 2012 IEEE Visual Communication and Image Processing. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation. He is a voting member of the Steering Committee of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. He was a distinguished lecturer of IEEE CAS from 2015-2016. He was the chair of IEEE CAS Multimedia Systems and Applications technical committee from 2015-2017. He is a fellow of IEEE.
